Everything you need to know about this surf spot

Cave, also known as Sete Bafos or The Basement is located just south of the Baia dos Dois Irmaos, where the spots Crazy Left and Coxos are located. It can be reached via a little dirt road just north of Ribeira d’Ilhas. Cave is without a doubt the heaviest wave in Ericeira and one of the most difficult waves in the world.

This spectacular wave was first discovered by bodyboarders and always seemed impossible for surfers. However, over the last few years more and more surfers are hunting this impressive right barrel. Cave has become famous for its spectacular and dangerous nature; this wave sets of from a shallow reef platform that is detached from the seabed, creating intense suction from the base towards the top of the wave. This creates a tubing wave that becomes progressively more hollow, wide and square with a stair effect, as if the wave would lead to a basement (justifying its name).

As you are basically surfing below reef level, one mistake has serious consequences. Fast, hollow and very shallow, so only for true professionals! Come and watch the show when the pros are around.
